Passage Two
Do you live in a city? Do you know how cities began? Long long ago, there were only a few thousand people in the world. (52) These people moved from place to place. They moved over the land, hunting (捕猎) animals for food.

Passage Three
Basketball is still a young game. It’s over a hundred years old. In the winter of 1891, a certain college was having some trouble with its boy students. Passage Four
The English language is different from any other languages. Yet English words don’t stay the same. It is always changing. New words are needed for new inventions and new ideas. Different words come into use, or older words are used in a new way.
English can change by borrowing words from other languages. “Tomato” was borrowed from Mexico. “Coffee” came from Turkey, and “tea” came from China. Now new space words are borrowed from other countries, too.
New words also come into use by putting two words together. “Postman and grandfather” are examples. (55) The names of people can also become new words. Our “sandwich” was named after a man called Sandwich.
